The prevalence of Ford Raptor models might make them appear commonplace, but their popularity doesn’t diminish their capabilities. Known for their prowess in challenging off-road races like Baja in Mexico and Finke in Australia, these trucks have a well-established reputation for conquering the toughest terrains. Now, a specially built Ford Raptor is gearing up to compete in Dakar with some of the rally world’s most skilled drivers at the helm.

In the upcoming 2025 race, Ford will enter a purpose-built race truck under the Ford Raptor banner without association to the F-150, Ranger, or Bronco Raptor. The initial teaser photos and video clips reveal a vehicle that bears little resemblance to the standard production models, fueling anticipation for its full unveiling.

Specialized Dakar trucks like this Ford Raptor are designed to be distinct from conventional models. For instance, the recent winner, Audi E-Tron, is a departure from typical Audi vehicles, showcasing performance technology without adherence to standard homologation regulations. These vehicles represent the pinnacle of off-road performance, unbounded by conventional road restrictions.

The powertrain of the Raptor remains a mystery due to the open regulations. It could feature a hybrid system akin to the E-Tron or highlight Ford’s signature EcoBoost technology. Regardless, one can expect a high level of performance and excitement from this exceptional vehicle.

Ford has revealed two of the drivers for this challenging endeavor: the accomplished Carlos Sainz Sr., a four-time Dakar Rally champion and double WRC titleholder, alongside two-time Dakar winner Nani Roma. Sainz’s recent victory with Audi and Roma’s past association with Ford’s M-Sport team in a Ranger T1+ truck in 2024 highlight the caliber of talent involved in this project. Gold is undoubtedly the goal for all participants.

Ford Performance faces an action-packed 18 months ahead with the addition of Le Mans to its global racing repertoire. Whether competing with a Mustang GT3 at La Sarthe or steering the enigmatic Raptor through the challenging terrains of Saudi Arabia, Ford is setting high expectations for its racing endeavors, backed by a formidable team.
