Ford is striving to simplify the experience for electric vehicle (EV) buyers.
On Monday, Ford CEO Jim Farley announced on LinkedIn that the company will offer a complimentary home charger along with installation for customers who purchase or lease a Mustang Mach-E, F-150 Lightning, or E-Transit.
According to Farley, customers will either receive the free Level 2 home charger with their vehicle or it can be delivered once they are ready. Ford will also arrange for a professional installation of the charger at no additional cost.
The installation must be seen as a “standard install,” which, as defined by Ford, means it will take place at a residential site with a dedicated electrical meter, a circuit of up to 60 amps, and wiring that does not exceed 80 feet.
Recently, Farley embarked on long road trips in EVs across the western United States and Europe. His conclusion is that consumers value “convenience, peace of mind, and expert service.”
Farley noted that Ford has recognized the significance of home charging in promoting EV adoption in the U.S. Research shows that nearly 90% of shoppers would be more inclined to buy an EV if they knew home charging was an option. He highlighted that questions about where, who, and the costs associated with charging can be confusing for consumers. This new initiative aims to eliminate uncertainties regarding home charging, according to Farley.
Ford was a pioneer in tackling the public charging infrastructure dilemma, alongside Tesla, by partnering with the electric vehicle giant. In 2023, Farley and Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced that Tesla’s Supercharger stations would be accessible to Ford vehicles. Additionally, Farley confirmed that Ford plans to adopt Tesla’s NACS charge port for its future EVs.
Earlier in 2024, Ford started providing CCS to NACS adapters for free to F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E owners as Tesla made its Supercharger network available to Ford EV drivers.
Note – This story has been updated to clarify what Ford classifies as a standard installation.
