Ford is seeking to obtain a patent for roof rails and roof racks that can retract when not in use, thereby reducing aerodynamic drag and potentially enhancing fuel efficiency or extending the range of electric vehicles (EVs).

Details about these innovative aerodynamic features were outlined in separate patent applications released by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) on July 11, 2024, based on filings submitted by Ford at earlier times.

One of the patent applications describes deployable roof rails that emerge from channels on a vehicle’s roof via hinges, functioning as mounting points for cargo carriers and accessories similar to the fixed roof rails commonly seen on many SUVs.

Another patent application proposes a deployable roof rack, specifically designed for pickup trucks. This roof rack would remain stowed behind the cab’s rear wall, at the front of the cargo bed, and can be pivoted upward onto the roof when needed.

While automakers do not always bring patented features to market, Ford is not the only company pursuing new methods to enhance aerodynamic efficiency. Hyundai has designed an active air skirt for EVs that lowers in front of the front wheels to minimize drag. The company asserts that this innovation could enhance the aerodynamic performance of SUVs, which also applies to Ford’s idea of deployable roof rails.

The urgency to maximize the range of EVs has reignited a longstanding focus on aerodynamics, reminiscent of efforts from nearly a century ago. This has led to the development of streamlined designs for vehicles such as the Hyundai Ioniq 6 and Volkswagen ID.7. Additionally, the Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX concept has demonstrated that prioritizing aerodynamics and reducing weight can significantly improve EV efficiency.
