The original owner of the first 1995 McLaren F1 in the United States has sold this remarkable supercar for a staggering $15.62 million at a Bonhams auction held on Friday. This sale marks the highest price ever paid for a McLaren, surpassing the previous record set by a 1998 F1 LM-Specification, which sold for $13.75 million at Monterey in 2015.
The vehicle that just changed hands is Chassis 044, one of only seven F1s modified and federalized to meet legal street requirements in the U.S. Although the modifications have been removed, they were included in the auction package.
This McLaren F1 is in excellent condition and has been painstakingly maintained, with its latest service completed just a month ago. Every service has been recorded since its purchase, and the car has logged 9,600 miles. According to the first owner, about half of those miles were accrued during a road trip in Europe shortly after acquiring the vehicle.
Under its sleek exterior, the supercar boasts a powerful 6.1-liter V12 engine sourced from BMW, which generates 627 horsepower and allows for a top speed of 240 mph. For over ten years, it held the title of the fastest production car in the world. The car features a silver exterior, complemented by a Connolly leather interior in black and gray, and is equipped with one seat.
By paying $15.62 million, the new owner receives not only a legendary supercar but also a variety of additional items including a watch, a pair of mechanic’s gloves, an Autoglym detailing kit, an F1 luggage set, and complete documentation of the vehicle. It’s reminiscent of how some sellers on Craigslist might generously offer a service manual with their car sale.
