Fiat Chrysler has voluntarily recalled about 1.1 million Ram pickup trucks in the U.S. to improve the tailgate locking mechanisms.

The decision follows an investigation by FCA U.S., which revealed that a small internal part within the power lock actuator control assembly could deteriorate over time, potentially causing the tailgate to unlatch unexpectedly when the component fails.

The recall affects Ram 1500, 2500, and 3500 pickups manufactured between 2015 and 2017. However, trucks with manual tailgate locks and those equipped with eight-foot cargo beds are excluded from the recall. The newly redesigned 2019 Ram 1500 is also not included, as it utilizes a different tailgate mechanism.

FCA has indicated that customers will be informed when service becomes available. In the meantime, the company advises owners of the affected vehicles, through the operating manuals, to secure any loose items before driving. Fortunately, these trucks come equipped with various features such as tie-down rings, cleats, high-friction bed liners, bulkhead dividers, and bed extenders to help secure loads.

The automaker is encouraging all U.S. customers to respond promptly to the recall notices to ensure a high recall participation rate. For additional questions, customers can reach out to FCA’s customer care center at 1-866-220-6747.

Regarding safety concerns, FCA U.S. has stated, “We are not aware of any injuries or accidents related to this issue.”

The recall also extends beyond the U.S. In Canada, approximately 260,315 vehicles are included, while around 19,432 trucks are affected in Mexico. Additionally, about 25,361 vehicles in certain markets outside the NAFTA region may also be impacted..
