Explore the Magnificent Wood Mosaic Inside the 2023 Range Rover SV

Expected to hit the market as a 2023 model, the Range Rover SV showcases the artistry of the automaker’s Special Vehicle Operations designers. While it may not boast engine enhancements, it does offer a supremely luxurious environment. Its opulence rivals that of a private jet, a sensation I experienced firsthand during a recent media preview event hosted by Land Rover. Draped in plush leather and soft materials, my attention was immediately captivated by the central console of the display vehicle—specifically, the intricate wood veneer adorning it, extending from the front row through to the refrigerator door positioned between the second-row seats. The SV’s designers opted for more than just a plain wood finish; upon closer inspection, you’ll notice a subtle yet distinct mosaic pattern within the wood detailing.

While wood veneer isn’t new to the Range Rover, the extent to which it’s employed in the SV is unprecedented. “Transforming such a complex graphic into a mass-production item was challenging,” shared Amy Frascella, Jaguar Land Rover’s color and materials director, in an interview.

Choosing the mosaic design posed its own challenges. Apart from harmonizing with the geometric motifs in the rest of the car’s interior, Frascella emphasized the importance of establishing a visual hierarchy. To avoid overwhelming patterns, she explained, “intersecting lines create a softer effect compared to introducing a different color inlay. The goal is subtlety and sophistication.” In essence, the goal is to strike a balance that captivates without overwhelming.

Seeking inspiration from upscale watches and intricate parquet floors, the team gravitated towards a chevron motif as a central design element. Initially considering a chevron pattern crafted from micro-metal inlay for the center console to guide user interaction, they ultimately opted for wood due to its subtler allure. I concur with this decision; the mosaic adds a discreetly refined touch to the overall interior.

The timber itself, incidentally, is a crafted veneer produced from silver birch—Forest Stewardship Council-certified and ethically acquired. After that, it goes through a large-scale and mechanized procedure, so it’s not just one individual appointed with piecing all the elements together manually for each vehicle. Land Rover contracts out the assembly to a provider, though that undisclosed provider doesn’t disclose much about the duration of the entire process.

The SV treatment is accessible on both regular and extended-wheelbase versions of the fresh Range Rover and encompasses a five-seat extended-wheelbase arrangement, a premier.

I’m yet to experience driving the latest Range Rover so I cannot comment on any driving experiences, but it’s absolutely a vehicle I’d like to chauffeur my pals and kin in, particularly in SV attire. The rear seat is an excellent spot to unwind and relax, and the small unfolding desk resembles the one you’d discover on a deluxe aircraft. Employ it to complete tasks or indulge in a roast pheasant.

One aspect is definite, however: The wood mosaic unquestionably surpasses these other finishes you could opt for.
