With customers now receiving their GMA T.50 models, we can finally explore how Gordon Murray’s latest creation stacks up against other supercars. Since its debut, Murray and his team have not extensively discussed the T.50’s performance in comparison to others, as he prioritizes the driving experience over performance metrics. However, car enthusiasts are eager to see how it measures up, and a new video lets us witness a customer drag racing their T.50 against a variety of supercars, showcasing its intriguing performance.
The McLaren F1, with its unique three-seat layout, powerful V12 engine, and focus on reducing weight, remains a benchmark for the ultimate driver’s car even after 30 years. For the T.50, Murray has amplified the qualities of the F1. Rather than the F1’s BMW M-built V12, the T.50 is equipped with a Cosworth-built 4.0-liter naturally aspirated V12 that screams to a staggering 12,000 rpm.
Lacking modern forced induction, this new V12 generates 661 horsepower and 353 lb-ft of torque, all delivered through a six-speed manual transmission to the rear wheels. While it might seem underpowered compared to today’s turbocharged, hybrid, all-wheel-drive hypercars, the T.50 boasts an impressively low dry weight of just 2,198 pounds, making it exceptionally lightweight relative to even its closest competitors. Additionally, Murray incorporated a rear-mounted fan, inspired by his ’70s Brabham F1 car, which boosts downforce by 50% while decreasing drag by 12.5%.
This performance configuration allows the T.50 to hold its own against high-powered competitors like the 1,063-horsepower Mercedes-AMG One, even after a less-than-ideal launch. In the video, the owner seems to be cautious with the T.50’s new clutch and launches it slowly. However, once they shift into second gear, the T.50 quickly regains speed. Its aerodynamic design and significant weight advantage compensate for its relatively lower power output.
Nevertheless, Murray has never been overly concerned with straight-line speed, so drag racing isn’t where the T.50 truly shines. It is primarily designed to deliver an exhilarating driving experience. Moreover, the sound of its high-revving V12 is bound to captivate anyone nearby. While it may not have the same musicality as the Lexus LFA’s V10, it produces a similarly thrilling, high-pitched wail reminiscent of a ’90s F1 car as it accelerates.
It’s exciting to finally see someone outside of Dario Franchitti take the GMA T.50 for a spin and to witness it compete with other supercars in real-world settings. This is just the beginning of what promises to be a series of captivating experiences as more customers receive their vehicles, providing ample opportunities to see and hear Murray’s latest automotive marvel.
