If you’re not familiar with car culture or the work of commercial automotive photographer Larry Chen, you can check out his Instagram profile (you’ll thank me later). Among his many accolades in the automotive world, Chen serves as the official photographer for both the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb and the Formula Drift series. Recently, he shared a Facebook video offering a glimpse into the action from this year’s 98th Pikes Peak event.
The video highlights the Acura NSX, captured through Chen’s Canon 1DX3 paired with a 400mm f2.8 V3 lens. It showcases the NSX ascending the mountain while Chen expertly captures each moment with rapid-fire photography that sounds akin to a machine gun. As the car speeds around corners, he adeptly adjusts his focus to seize stunning shots as it approaches.
In his caption, Chen elaborates on his “machine gun spray” technique for car photography, explaining that taking numerous photos increases the chances of getting that perfect shot. While many may search for tips on YouTube, bolstering your skills in smartphone photography can be greatly enhanced by following advice from Chen, also known as Machine Gun Larry.
Earlier this July, Chen collaborated with the Petersen Automotive Museum to produce a YouTube video offering smartphone photography tips for cars. It’s a realistic approach since most of us aren’t equipped like movie characters with a full arsenal of high-end cameras.
Instead, many carry just one camera — their smartphone. Fortunately, smartphone camera technology has advanced significantly, enabling users to create and edit professional-looking photos with devices like iPhones or Androids. Chen notes in the video that a smartphone can occasionally be more effective than a DSLR in specific situations.
