Originally, the sport-oriented Mk2 Volkswagen Golf GTI featured a 1.8-liter, fuel-injected four-cylinder engine that produced 137 horsepower. For Volkswagen and those purchasing these cars nearly 30 years ago, that level of power was deemed satisfactory. Fast forward nearly three decades, and an innovative engineer has successfully crammed an astonishing 1,100 additional horsepower into a standard Mk2 Golf—resulting in a vehicle that truly flies.

A YouTube video posted in April showcases a Mk2 Golf boasting a remarkable 1,233 horsepower, which completed a quarter mile in just 8.67 seconds and reached a speed of 174 miles per hour (approximately 281 kph). In contrast to the original front-wheel-drive configuration, this modified vehicle utilizes a 4Motion all-wheel-drive system to effectively manage the power.

As detailed in the YouTube description, the upgraded Mk2, crafted by Boba Racing, can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in just 2.5 seconds and achieve a top speed of 217 mph—putting it in line with a modern Porsche 911 Turbo S.

Notably, one would hardly recognize this Volkswagen as a modified car at first glance. Its stealthy appearance makes it a true sleeper.
