The automotive landscape is evolving, with the shift towards electrification influencing how we purchase, operate, and assess vehicles. In response, automakers like Audi are adapting their electric vehicle lineup to provide clarity to consumers. Leading the charge are the revamped Q8 and SQ8 E-Tron models.
In 2024, Audi is undergoing a transformation in its electrified vehicle naming convention. The sunset of the standalone E-Tron badge signals the dawn of the Q8 branding for the updated models, featuring a performance-focused SQ8 variant and a Sportback version for each. Notably, distinction should be made between the traditional Q8 and SQ8 models in Audi’s lineup, as the E-Tron version pertains specifically to the electric variant. (It’s important to note that this transition is still a work in progress.)
Let’s dive into a pivotal enhancement: range. Audi has reengineered the E-Tron Q8 and SQ8 to achieve a notable increase in their travel distance per charge. The base Q8, equipped with a 95-kilowatt-hour battery pack and tested on the WLTP cycle, is estimated to travel approximately 362 miles, while the Sportback variant could reach an impressive 373 miles. Despite the larger 114-kWh battery pack in the more potent SQ8, it is anticipated to cover around 305 miles, with the Sportback version offering an estimated 314 miles. By comparison, the preceding E-Tron and E-Tron S Sportback models had respective ranges of 280 and 233 miles.
Audi credits the range extension to a revamped rear-axle motor featuring an increased number of stator coils, enhancing efficiency by elevating the coil turns from 12 to 14. Additionally, modifications to the SUV’s torque vectoring system and aerodynamic aspects have reduced its overall drag coefficient, contributing to a remarkable 33% range boost in the base Q8.
Furthermore, Audi has enhanced the charging performance, with the SQ8 capable of reaching an 80% charge from 10% in just 31 minutes when connected to a suitable high-power charger under optimal conditions.
Despite these advancements, the power output remains constant. The SQ8 retains Audi’s potent tri-motor setup, delivering 496 horsepower and 718 pound-feet of torque. Meanwhile, the base Q8, equipped with a dual-motor powertrain, can generate up to 402 horsepower and 490 pound-feet of torque in “boost mode.”
Audi has announced that the new Q8 and SQ8 models will be available in U.S. showrooms starting April 2023. While U.S. pricing details are pending, German markets are expected to see a starting price of around $75,000. Official U.S. specifications and EPA-rated range figures are yet to be disclosed.
