It’s official – Lotus has announced that its cutting-edge Type 130 electric hypercar will go by the name Evija, pronounced as “ev-eye-a.”
Meaning “the first in existence” or “the living one” according to Lotus, the Evija marks a significant milestone as the company’s inaugural all-new model in more than ten years and its primary electrified production vehicle. Production will be exclusive; only 130 units set to be manufactured, with each model reportedly priced at £2 million (over $2.5 million) apiece. However, getting a closer look at Evija won’t be easy, as attendees at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed will only be treated to a sneak peek of the vehicle through a captivating “light show” that conceals much of its body.
In a departure from its traditional models, Lotus has tailored the Evija to be practical for everyday use, boasting enhanced comfort features and alleviating concerns about range anxiety. The vehicle will house a cutting-edge battery co-developed with Formula E battery supplier Williams Advanced Engineering, delivering an impressive range exceeding 250 miles. The Evija is also equipped with a CCS charging system, granting it the flexibility to charge from both DC fast-chargers and residential AC outlets.
However, Lotus is keen on preserving its legacy and refuses to compromise by bulking up the Evija for a softer appeal; reportedly packing over 1,000 all-wheel horsepower, ensuring the Evija holds its own amongst its peers.
Describing Evija as “the perfect name for our new car,” Lotus Cars CEO Phil Popham expressed admiration for the ground-breaking vehicle. He stated, “The Evija is a Lotus like no other, yet a true Lotus in every sense. It will re-establish our brand on the global automotive stage and pave the way for further visionary models.”
Reports suggest that Lotus will not commence Evija deliveries until the early 2020s, with forecasts hinting at the launch of three to four new Lotus models during that period. Anticipate the arrival of two sports cars in 2020, followed by a conceivable electric crossover around 2022. With a rejuvenation of the Lotus brand on the horizon, enthusiasts eagerly await what the future holds.
