Elon Musk Critiques Ram Trucks While Promoting Tesla’s Upcoming Pickup
Tesla’s CEO, Elon Musk, took to Twitter to criticize Ram trucks, referring to their impressive V8 towing capacity of 12,750 pounds as “puny.” He quipped that such a capacity might only be sufficient for transporting materials to construct children’s toys. His remarks came after a Twitter user suggested that he regularly hauls heavy steel beams with his Ram truck.
In a tweet, Musk responded, “12,000 lbs!? How puny. Do you construct children’s toys?”
Musk has previously announced that Tesla’s forthcoming electric pickup will boast an astonishing towing capacity of 300,000 pounds, setting an extremely high benchmark for competition.
He reaffirmed this claim with another tweet, stating simply, “300,000 lb towing capacity.”
This isn’t the first time Musk has used similar comments to position Tesla ahead of competitors. He once disparaged Porsche’s 350 kW charging capacity as merely a "children’s toy" during the unveiling of Tesla’s V3 Supercharging stations. When the Supercharger V3 was eventually launched, it featured a charging capacity of 250 kW, limited by the Model 3’s battery system, although Musk hinted that future Tesla vehicles might support higher charging rates.
In a past tweet, he remarked, “A mere 350 kW … what are you referring to, a children’s toy?”
As anticipation surrounds the release of Tesla’s pickup, questions remain regarding its sustainable towing capabilities and the potential impact on both range and drivetrain durability. The electric pickup, noted for its “cyberpunk” design, is expected to be showcased later this summer, though Tesla’s futuristic styling may not appeal to all consumers.
With the competition heating up, especially with Ford’s electric F-150 entering tests and the startup Rivian generating buzz, Tesla faces increasing pressure to execute a successful launch. Failure to do so could hinder Tesla’s position in the rapidly evolving vehicle market.
