Previously, the CEO of Ram seemed to confirm that the initial electric pickup truck from the manufacturer would feature a combustion engine range extender to charge the onboard battery. However, upon the unveiling of the Ram 1500 Revolution BEV Concept, it became apparent that such an engine was absent. This decision was influenced by the necessity for Ram to establish itself as an EV-focused company, emphasizing the electric power aspect in the Revolution concept.
Ram CEO Mike Koval Jr. stated in an interview with The Drive, “Our focus is on a battery-electric vehicle. This is a battery-electric concept.”
Regarding future plans, Koval mentioned, “We are currently concentrating on the Ram Revolution, a complete BEV. The official launch of our production BEV is upcoming. Beyond that, I prefer not to speculate for competitive reasons. The potential in this industry is exhilarating, and the upcoming year will be quite eventful.”
Details regarding the Ram Revolution are currently limited. It will utilize the body-on-frame STLA Frame platform, housing its battery pack within the frame rails similar to the Ford F-150 Lightning. Additionally, it will feature standard independent rear suspension, a progression beyond the coil spring setup seen on the traditional gas-powered Ram 1500.
While Koval didn’t rule out the possibility of an ICE range extender in the future, his statements suggest that the RXEV model may not be the inaugural release.
Koval expressed, “We are exploring various electrification solutions and aim to pioneer new paths at Ram, distinct from the conventional approaches. We have listened to our customers, who emphasize the importance of core attributes, including range. By introducing our electrified lineup in 2024, we believe we will stand out in the market.”
This initial rendition of the Ram Revolution is just the beginning, with Koval assuring that a production-ready version will be unveiled in a couple of months. Perhaps then, we will catch a glimpse of the range-extended truck, unless Ram has surprise developments in store, such as a TRX EV.
