The fast driver of a Maserati Levante in California narrowly escaped a fatal fate as their SUV was wedged between an embankment and a flyover after reaching speeds exceeding 100 mph, according to the Oakland division of the California Highway Patrol.
An incident occurred on Monday morning when a CHP officer tried to pull over the speeding Maserati SUV. Pictures of the vehicle show it equipped with 19-inch Machine-Polished Zefiro wheels, available in various trims ranging from $78,290 to $94,290. Though not the 590-horsepower Levante Trofeo model, it managed to outpace the pursuing CHP officers, leading them on a high-speed chase on westbound Interstate 580, surpassing 100 mph as per SFGate.
Early into the pursuit, the Maserati driver chose to exit the highway, speeding up an embankment under a flyover and getting stuck in the gap. Despite damage to the roof, the 32-year-old driver miraculously survived, possibly due to the impact being lesser on the driver’s side. He was rescued from the vehicle and taken to the hospital after complaining of pain.
Officer David Arias from the Oakland CHP remarked, “The chase was brief. He didn’t get far before exiting the highway and then took a sharp left, veering off the ramp and colliding with the underside of the flyover,” to SFGate.
“He’s incredibly fortunate to be alive,” Arias added. “It’s astonishing that he made it out alive.”
If the driver manages to avoid charges of reckless evasion, he’ll still have to deal with the consequences from the owner of the Levante—who, according to SFGate, happens to be his girlfriend. This relationship may soon be ending.
