It resembles a Mazda RX-7 and performs like one as well, but hold on! Jared Perry from Hakone Motorsports visited the Hoonigan Garage, revealing an unexpected twist — his Mazda FC3S is powered by a newly swapped Nissan Skyline RB25DET engine.
The straight-six RB engines are recognized for their ability to handle power, yet this engine choice is relatively rare compared to the more common Chevy LS or Toyota 2J swaps. Perry explained that this unique combination came about by chance, as he bought the FC as a bare shell, and a friend had an RB engine available for purchase.
Interestingly, Perry noted that the RB swap adds a bit more than a hundred pounds compared to a V8 LS swap. While the small block might seem like a more logical choice weight-wise, the distinctiveness of fitting an RB into an FC certainly justifies the decision. His RX-7 boasts 415 horsepower and 390 lb.-ft. of torque at 14 pounds of boost, all while remaining reliable.
The Mazda-Nissan connection continues inside the car, where a 240SX dashboard fits seamlessly, aside from minor notches at the corners to make room for the welded roll cage. The Nissan S13 platform is known for its compatibility with various custom projects, making it a modular option for FC owners who never thought they could incorporate an S13 dash.
Despite the extensive modifications made for the engine swap, Perry intends to use the vehicle mainly for thrashing on the track whenever possible. Designed for drifting, the FC3S is outfitted with BC coilover suspension, Cosmis wheels, Haltech electronics, and a hydraulic handbrake.
