Today marks a significant milestone for Bugatti as it unveils the highly anticipated successor to the Chiron. While the debut of a new multi-million dollar hypercar might not be significant to everyone, it is a considerable event for the automotive world. This release represents only the third new model from Bugatti since its revival under the Volkswagen Group, following the Veyron in 2005. Even the Chiron, which still maintains a modern appeal, has been on the market for nearly a decade since its launch in 2016.
This occasion also signifies the beginning of a fresh chapter for Bugatti. It marks the brand’s first launch under CEO Mate Rimac, who is also the founder of the Rimac electric hypercar company. Observers will be keen to discover how Rimac’s expertise in performance electric vehicles influences the new Bugatti.
In terms of performance, the new Bugatti—which will have its name unveiled later today—features a completely redesigned engine layout, the first change since the introduction of the Veyron. Since the brand’s revival in 2005, Bugatti has exclusively employed quad-turbocharged W16 engines. However, this time it is introducing an innovative naturally aspirated V16 with hybrid capabilities.
Bugatti has provided several teasers of its new powertrain, showcasing elements like the valve cover, firing order, and exhaust sound. In a recent preview, a visually striking gauge cluster reminiscent of a luxury Swiss watch was displayed, featuring a skeletonized clock-face that serves as both a speedometer and tachometer. While this may primarily serve as a countdown to the car’s launch, if the actual gauge cluster resembles this design, it will undoubtedly be impressive. Additionally, it appears that the speedometer exceeds 500 km/h, possibly hinting at Bugatti’s intention to challenge Koenigsegg for the record of speeds exceeding 310 mph. The accompanying audio clip features exhilarating revs, gear shifts, and a calm return, all sounding remarkable.
