Discover the BMW ‘858CSL’: The Most Impressive E31 8 Series Custom Build We’ve Encountered

BMW enthusiasts often hold mixed feelings about the original “E31” 8 Series. On one hand, it’s a stunning grand-touring coupe with a quintessentially ’80s aesthetic, complemented by a V12 engine option. On the other hand, many models lacked a thrilling driving experience, were not particularly reliable, and were overly complex. Nonetheless, some tuning experts have recognized the 8 Series’ potential, transforming it into impressive custom builds. Among them, the BMW “858CSL” crafted by Reyn Speed Shop in California stands out as possibly the best version to date.

The most powerful iteration of the original 8 Series was the 850CSi, a V12 coupe with hardware and driving characteristics deserving of an M badge. However, Reyn’s team took it a step further by stripping the 8 Series of its outdated mechanical components, constructing a new carbon fiber body, and upgrading the interior to a more contemporary standard.

Starting with the body, the 858CSL features a complete carbon fiber recreation that is wider, equipped with flare designs reminiscent of the E30 M3. This clever widebody addition enhances the 8 Series’ look, echoing the original unproduced E31 BMW M8 prototype but without the rear fender vents. Additionally, Reyn replaced the original popup headlights with hood vents, enlarged the lower headlights, and crafted a completely new front bumper. As noted by Top Gear Netherlands, the car’s nose now resembles Italdesign’s iconic BMW Nazca C2 concept.

Yet, the true highlight lies under the hood. The outdated V12 has been replaced with a stroked 5.8-liter version of the E60 M5’s V10, from which the car draws its name—858. Unlike the E60 M5’s tricky “SMG” automated manual transmission, the 858CSL boasts a genuine six-speed manual, promising a stunning auditory experience.

Some components from the E60 M5 have also found their way into the 858CSL. The steering wheel, center console, shifter, and gauges appear to have been directly sourced from the E60 M5. The seats, originally from the M5, have also been modified with race harnesses. While this may detract slightly from the original E31’s interior charm, the upgraded amenities provide a more modern driving experience.

Reyn showcased the 858CSL at the Legends of the Autobahn event during Monterey Car Week, where it received the Best of Show award in the tuner category. It retains the original’s aesthetic and essence while updating the outdated mechanical elements that often frustrate enthusiasts. Having seen numerous E31 builds over the years, this might just be the standout example.
