Car lovers are eager to make the most of their vehicles, and it’s always thrilling to see the various ways they find enjoyment. For Tommy Dolo, a proud resident of Hawaii and a man who claims 43 years of sobriety, true joy is embodied in his remarkable Toyota Starlet.

Though the 1981 Toyota Starlet isn’t a well-known choice among tuners, this under-the-radar status is part of its charm. Surprisingly, this compact Japanese vehicle features rear-wheel drive—a fact that likely brought a smile to many faces!

“It’s different, small, and rear-wheel-drive,” Tommy said. “I’m drawn to cars that others overlook.”

For anyone captivated by JDM culture, personalizing their unassuming Japanese rides is almost a rite of passage. Tommy has added several modifications to make his Toyota Starlet uniquely his own.

Initially, you’ll notice the eye-catching, period-appropriate TOM’S livery decorating the original paint. The second thing that grabs attention is the car’s low profile, thanks to air suspension, coupled with black-on-black Celica Supra wheels.

Subtle enhancements include a KE70 front lip, custom-fitted to the Starlet, and a front bumper from an older Corolla that has been trimmed to size. Additionally, the car boasts custom side skirts, a TRD-style rear spoiler, and side mirrors sourced from eBay.

This compact car may have begun its life as a mundane, fuel-efficient subcompact, but it certainly now looks exhilarating. However, it remains that way mostly in appearance. While Tommy has equipped it with headers and a complete exhaust system, the Starlet is still powered by its original 1300 cc 4K-C engine, which generates a modest 59 horsepower. At least it’s quicker than a walk, right?

“It feels like driving a legal go-kart on the road,” Tommy explained. “The car is greatly underpowered, but with its agility, you really feel like you’re moving fast. It’s pure fun. It’s incredible fun.”
