Gordon Murray’s iconic McLaren F1 made waves when it was introduced in 1992, smashing performance records and captivating car enthusiasts. Yet, what truly set it apart was its reputation as the ultimate driving machine, a title it arguably still holds today. Attempting to create a successor to such a legendary vehicle seemed like a daunting task, but Murray was determined to take on the challenge. His creation, the long-awaited GMA T.50, demonstrates that it is indeed a worthy heir.

In a recent video by Hagerty, automotive journalist Henry Catchpole experiences the thrill of driving both the McLaren F1 and the GMA T.50 back-to-back along a beautiful, winding road—an opportunity that many car enthusiasts, including myself, would envy.

As the spiritual successor to the F1, the T.50 shares several similarities on paper—it features mid-mounted, naturally aspirated V12 engines, manual transmissions, similar dimensions, and central driving positions with three seats. However, Catchpole highlights that, in practice, the two cars offer strikingly different driving experiences.

The McLaren F1 astonished the automotive world when it debuted with its lightweight design, extensive use of carbon fiber, and impressive BMW-engineered powertrain. Although it was a remarkable achievement, Murray, a known perfectionist, aspired to address the areas that could be improved—and he certainly succeeded.

Unlike the F1’s 6.1-liter BMW V12, the T.50 is powered by a 3.9-liter V12 designed by Cosworth, generating 664 horsepower and capable of revving up to an exhilarating 12,400 rpm. While the F1 produces a deep growl, the T.50 emits a high-pitched scream reminiscent of 1990s Formula 1 cars. Just listening to it through speakers evokes an adrenaline rush, and it’s likely Catchpole was swept up in the experience. Additionally, Murray has enhanced features like air conditioning, making it more comfortable on warm days. The T.50 boasts quieter brakes, improved visibility, and brighter headlights that illuminate a greater distance.

In virtually all technical aspects, the T.50 outshines the F1. It is lighter, generates more power, offers greater comfort, and has increased capacity for luggage. While successors sometimes falter in capturing the unique driving joy of their predecessors—even if they surpass them technically—Gordon Murray Automotive stands apart. The T.50 is no ordinary sports car, and it seems to have successfully built upon the legacy of a legend. Catchpole, who openly identifies as a McLaren F1 enthusiast, confessed that he would choose the T.50 over the F1 if given that choice. His broad smile and excited tone while driving it clearly affirm his sentiment.
