The Paris 2024 Olympics might overshadow Fashion Week as it unfolds on the Seine on July 26. Expect not only a parade of exceptional athletes but also a spectacular display of fashion from the renowned house of Dior.
A report from WWD reveals that the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics will showcase 3,000 costumes, with contributions from Dior. It’s no surprise to see the French luxury brand involved, considering its affiliation with LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, the official “creative partner” of the Paris Olympics. For this year’s event, another LVMH-owned brand, Louis Vuitton, crafted custom trunks for the Olympic torch and medals, while the medals themselves were designed by the jewelry house Chaumet, also under the LVMH umbrella.
Dior has been preparing for the Olympic Games for some time now. Recently, the brand added prominent female athletes to its list of brand ambassadors. This includes athletes such as Sara Balzer from France, Emma McKeon from Australia, Elaine Thompson-Herah from Jamaica, Misaki Emura from Japan, Alex Morgan from the USA, and Louise-Aïna Taboulet from France. These athletes are ready to compete in this year’s Paris Olympics.
Prior to this, Dior’s creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri showcased the maison’s Fall/Winter 2024 haute couture collection, drawing inspiration from Ancient Greece, the birthplace of the Olympic Games.
Details about Dior’s presentation at the Olympics remain under wraps, but it promises to showcase the brand’s exceptional craftsmanship. Thomas Jolly, the artistic director of the Paris 2024 Olympics opening and closing ceremonies, expressed to WWD, “These renowned brands—like [Louis] Vuitton and Dior—are masters in the art of craftsmanship. This event will shine the light on French expertise, highlighting talent and beauty, seamlessly intertwining with the overarching narrative.”
The limelight won’t just be on France’s fashion giants. Reports suggest that the opening ceremony will feature creations from 15 emerging fashion designers, with a strong focus on sustainable design. For the first time in Olympic history, the opening ceremony will occur on the Seine River instead of at a conventional stadium. Athletes will flaunt their national pride as they sail along the iconic river during the four-hour extravaganza.
Meanwhile, leading up to the Olympics, LVMH will host a grand welcome party at the Foundation Louis Vuitton. The soirée will be co-hosted by Louis Vuitton’s men’s creative director Pharrell Williams and LVMH’s chairman and CEO Bernard Arnault. The guest list will include celebrities and athletes like Charlize Theron, Serena Williams, and Dior’s ambassador Rosalía. With such a lineup, the Paris 2024 Olympics promises to be a truly glamorous event.
