Dealer markups can frustrate even the most dedicated car enthusiasts. When dealerships attempt to drastically increase the price of limited-edition vehicles, it often puts them beyond the reach of average buyers, even when the manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) might seem affordable. This trend is all too common, prompting some manufacturers to take action against such practices. In a recent case from a Honda dealership in Canada, a “used” Civic Type R is being offered for an inflated price exceeding $63,000 USD, despite having only traveled 8 kilometers.

Typically, a brand new Type R comes with an MSRP of around $40,000, depending on optional features.

The dealership appears to be employing a strategy to circumvent regulations that prevent them from selling “new” cars at exorbitant prices. While this method technically sidesteps the issue, it undoubtedly raises ethical questions.

One plausible explanation for this markup could be that the car was officially sold to a customer, thus establishing a previous owner in its history. However, neither the listing nor the Reddit discussion regarding this situation provides a comprehensive CarFax report, leading us to suspect they may not have taken the necessary steps, given the likelihood of being caught.

Regardless of the approach taken, it’s clear that a dealership willing to hike up the price of a vehicle by over $20,000 is acting unethically. For that kind of money, one could opt for a significantly faster BMW M2 and still have some cash left over, making this decision seem like a no-brainer—at least that’s what we hope. It would be preferable if no wealthy or gullible buyers view this as a good deal, so the dealership understands the implications of its actions.
