Before the Cybertruck debuted, Tesla announced that one variant of its electric pickup would achieve a range of 500 miles. However, once deliveries commenced, the company could only guarantee a range of up to 340 miles. The 500-mile claim came with a caveat: it required a range extender that had not yet been released. Unfortunately for potential buyers, the pricing and specifications for this accessory have been disclosed, and it still does not meet expectations.

The online configurator for the Tesla Cybertruck now includes an option for the range extender, which consists of an additional battery pack stored in the truck’s bed. This addition costs $16,000 and requires professional installation at a Tesla service center. Nevertheless, even with this extender, the maximum range of the Cybertruck reaches only 470 miles in the base pickup, which is still below the original 500-mile target. Tesla has yet to provide details on the capacity of the range extender.

Moreover, since the range extender is essentially a large battery pack, it occupies about one-third of the available bed space, reducing the usable length to four feet. While Tesla has not disclosed the weight of the extra battery pack, it is reasonable to assume it will be substantial.

Tesla has indicated that customers will need to wait until “early 2025” for range extenders to be installed on their trucks, assuming there are no delays. However, those who order a new Cybertruck can reserve a range extender for $500, with priority installation included.

This announcement comes shortly after Tesla removed the $60,990 entry-level rear-wheel-drive model from its website. Currently, the least expensive Cybertruck available is the all-wheel-drive version, which starts at $102,235. Including the optional range extender brings the price to $118,235, just a few thousand dollars shy of the 845-hp “Cyberbeast,” priced at $122,235.

For owners who prioritize towing capabilities over cargo space, the range extender may be a useful option. However, sacrificing two feet of usable bed space seems counterintuitive for a vehicle designed for hauling, especially when the benefits fall short of what was originally promised.
