Considering the ultimate large Maserati drop-top, certain prerequisites likely come to mind. First and foremost, it must exude a striking appearance – and with hints of the MC20 supercar, this stylish new GranCabrio effortlessly meets that criteria. An elegant interior is another essential feature – which this recent addition proudly boasts. And of course, it should be powered by a robust V8 engine. However, regarding that last point…

The commitment to decarbonize every automaker’s lineup encompasses brands big and small, including Maserati. This implies that while there is a traditional combustion engine variant of the new GranCabrio known as the Trofeo, the model likely to make waves is the Folgore.

This opulent, high-performance, open-air grand tourer aims to propel Maserati into the current era of electric vehicles (EVs). And for those curious, Folgore translates to “Lightning” in Italian.

One cannot deny the sheer astonishment when examining the electric GranCabrio’s impressive specifications on paper.

Equipped with three electric motors – one situated at the front axle and the other two at the rear – the GranCabrio Folgore boasts all-wheel drive with rear torque-vectoring capabilities. This means it has the capacity to adjust power to each individual rear wheel based on the driving conditions.

The GranCabrio V6 handles beautifully, offering a more balanced and composed driving experience – although exhibiting slightly more body roll than the most ardent enthusiasts might desire – and generally provides a more cohesive performance that outshines the somewhat binary “direction and accelerate” approach necessary with the Folgore.

However, as a vehicle for driving aficionados, it lacks. It consistently feels heavy and unresponsive, a car that camouflages its evident shortcomings in cornering speeds with potent electric acceleration on straightaways. It’s an effective but not particularly captivating approach.
