While some individuals amass seashells or stamps, my passion lies in accumulating islands — particularly the sunlit, lush isles of the South Pacific.
This pursuit has guided me to explore the most splendid locations in French Polynesia. Via freighters, yachts, and cruise vessels, I have ventured to over 100 islands, each one a gem.

Tahiti
Island Atmosphere: Vibrant. Author of “Moby Dick,” Herman Melville, visited in 1841 and marveled at it as “magnificent; a mass of shaded tints of green from beach to mountaintop; endlessly diversified with valleys, ridges, glens, and cascades … waterfalls sparkle in the sunlight.” Even after nearly 200 years, the island remains awe-inspiring, although the harbor town is a touch unpolished.
Perfect Proposal Spot: Consider a hike up Mount Aorai, one of Tahiti’s tallest peaks. The climb offers breathtaking views of the shoreline, cascading valleys, and rugged peaks. The journey commences at O Belvedere restaurant, but it’s a lengthy 6½-mile trek to the summit. Propose along the way or pause at the magnificent Fautaua Valley waterfall, where glistening water plunges 450 feet into a vast pool, before dropping to one knee. For a picturesque background, the lighthouse on Pointe Vénus, along Tahiti’s northern shore, is ideal.
Particulars: Tahiti serves as the primary portal to other islands in the vicinity, harboring Fa’a’ā International Airport, and acting as the home base for Windstar cruises.
Bora Bora
Island Atmosphere: Enchanting. Bora Bora is famed for its vibrant lagoon, lavish flora, and twin peaks. Mount Otemanu looms 2,385 feet high at the heart of the atoll; another summit, Mount Pahia, rises to 2,169 feet.
Perfect Proposal Spot: On the beach while enjoying a romantic candlelit dinner. Windstar frequently offers an exclusive island “fire dancing” experience here, and the crew can arrange privacy for your magical moment before other guests arrive. Lastly, nothing compares to uttering “Will you marry me?” in a helicopter as you soar above the peaks.

Moorea

It boasts two lagoons, Cook’s Bay and Opunohu Bay, both with transparent, turquoise waters and unspoiled beaches. Moorea’s sharp peaks, draped in emerald hues, sharply rise from the coast and beckon exploration.
Perfect Proposal Location: On a leisurely walk through ancient locales. Moorea’s Three Pines Trail and Opunohu Valley Loop near Belvedere Viewpoint encompass over 500 archaeological sites. Alternatively, trek the Three Coconut Trees Pass, Moorea’s most favored trail, for stunning panoramic vistas of an ancient volcano. Other options: Engage in a private 4×4 safari excursion to behold Moorea’s lagoons, volcanic summits, Belvedere Lookout, Opunohu Bay, and Cook’s Bay, along with a charming hidden gem of mine, a serene pineapple plantation. Or head to the private shore near Sofitel’s Kia Ora Moorea Beach Resort and Restaurant for supper. The resort features splendid landscaped gardens.

Huahine
Island Atmosphere: Serene. Huahine comprises two islands, Huahine Nui (large) and Huahine Iti (small), with a stunning lagoon of a color reminiscent of a paint can and a barrier reef encircling both isles.
