Road Scholar, well-known for its informative travel programs catered to seniors, has introduced a new family-oriented program called “Exploring the Essence of the Civil Rights Movement Together.” This hands-on experience is influenced by the organization’s prosperous “The Civil Rights Movement” initiative and is designed to educate families on the history of the Civil Rights Movement while fostering meaningful dialogues and comprehension across different age groups.
“We are thrilled to present this inventive program that allows our participants to delve into the civil rights past together with their offspring and grandchildren,” stated Maeve Hartney, Chief Programs Officer at Road Scholar. “Our objective is to curate meaningful encounters that not only inform but also reinforce family ties and motivate future generations to advocate for equality and fairness.”
Participants in the “Essence of the Civil Rights” program will get the chance to explore significant landmarks and critical locations in Atlanta, Montgomery, Selma, and Birmingham, where pivotal events of the Civil Rights Movement transpired. Supervised by adept educators, including historians and local advocates, attendees will take part in interactive debates, listen to personal narratives, and achieve a stronger grasp of the challenges and victories of the movement.
“The educational family program on civil rights was designed to prevent the narrative of the Civil Rights Movement from fading away,” shared Bobbie Duncan from the Center for Educational Adventure, a collaborating partner with Road Scholar for this initiative. “Through enlightening content and stimulating discussions, we aim to bridge the generational gap between Road Scholar elders and their grandchildren to uphold the essence of the Civil Rights Movement within them.”
The program is currently accepting registrations for grandparents and their offspring, aged 13-18. (Grandparents and grandchildren can also partake in the program separately from the parents, as a unique “skip-gen” encounter). The inaugural departure date is set for June 22-28, 2025.
