Classic Alfa Romeos Fill Junkyard in Michigan Amid Controversy

Though often viewed as unreliable, vintage Alfa Romeos are not typically found in American junkyards. Due to Alfa’s long absence from the U.S. market, many damaged models have been handed down among enthusiasts as parts vehicles. Currently, however, a junkyard located near the heart of the American auto industry is overflowing with these cars, and the circumstances behind this situation remain somewhat unclear.

The impressive collection of Alfa Romeos is situated at US Auto Supply in Sterling Heights, Michigan, part of the Detroit metropolitan area. Recent images shared by the business reveal dozens of classic Alfas in varying degrees of disrepair. Some of these cars appear capable of running, while others bear crash damage. It’s evident that this is not a curated collection, but rather a stock of parts cars.

While the specific models present in the junkyard aren’t fully detailed, several identifiable types include Spider sports cars, 164 sedans, and at least one Alfetta. Notably, a Giulia TI was confirmed by Dean Russell, the former caretaker who is well-acquainted with these vehicles.

Russell operates Trail Auto, a local shop specializing in Alfa Romeos, where the cars were being stored until a recent conflict with the city escalated. He explained that the cars were removed following a court order related to a zoning dispute but stated that he still possesses the titles and plans to reclaim them. He refrained from providing additional details, citing the influx of inquiries he has already received regarding the vehicles.

Commentators on the junkyard’s social media post are speculating about the reasons behind the decision to remove the cars from the mechanic’s lot. Some suggest a prolonged disagreement between the shop and city authorities, though the various accounts conflict and do not clearly outline any misconduct, leaving the true narrative elusive.

Regardless of the unfolding events, this situation represents a significant confrontation over a treasure trove of Alfa parts in the country. Ultimately, the priority is ensuring these parts reach those who need them, especially since Alfa Romeo is unlikely to reproduce many of these components in the near future.
