CITROEN PRESENTS C5 AIRCROSS CONCEPT: THE PROMISE OF A FAMILY LOUNGE SUV WITH SHARP DESIGN

After introducing the C3 Aircross last June, Citroën is continuing its strategy in the SUV sector by launching the World Premiere of the C5 Aircross Concept. This model offers a glimpse into what the brand’s next contender in the C segment could look like. The C5 Aircross Concept showcases the revitalization of Citroën, highlighting its ability to meet the diverse needs of customers seeking an accessible and distinctive SUV that prioritizes space, comfort, and practicality for families. This concept illustrates Citroën’s ambition in a significant market segment.

Built on the Stellantis Group’s STLA Medium platform, the C5 Aircross Concept is designed as a multi-energy vehicle, exuding a bold and dynamic presence. Its muscular and aerodynamic shape cleverly minimizes the drawbacks typically associated with SUV silhouettes. The design features generous dimensions, flowing surfaces, a compact height, and an extended rear overhang. The lower front hood and sloped rear roofline contribute to its strong profile, while the cabin is curved with quarter windows equipped with aerodynamic elements, and the Citroën Light Wing tail lights are flush to optimize airflow. With a length of 4.65m, this concept provides ample interior space and promises a peaceful, connected driving experience for families with diverse lifestyles.

1. A muscular, dense SUV that asserts the Brand’s ambition

In an increasingly competitive SUV market filled with similar designs, Citroën aims to stand out with the C5 Aircross Concept. This model is characterized by its solid form and abundant interior space, embracing a straightforward silhouette. The front end is tall and incorporates the new logo, showcasing strength along with fluidity.

Moving away from softer curves, the C5 Aircross Concept presents itself as a robust and serious SUV, affirming the brand’s new design language with a confident stature made possible by its unique proportions. Its dimensions of 1.66 m in height and 4.65 m in length (15 cm longer than the existing C5 Aircross) create a balance of sleekness and energy. This modern, muscular build distinguishes it from competitors.

The broad stance and pronounced shoulder lines contribute to a strong road presence, while the spacious passenger cabin highlights its suitability as a family vehicle. The side profile showcases a dynamic line that flows from front to rear, framed by taut ribs that enhance its sporty appearance. The vertical rear profile suggests ample cargo space, while a subtle indentation on the front doors maintains graphic balance and elongates the design in line with Citroën’s contemporary aesthetic. Vertical color accents on the front doors and the vehicle’s bow provide familiar visual cues linking it to the C3 and C3 Aircross models.

2. A light signature symbolising innovative design

The front of the vehicle features a new three-point light signature, a hallmark of the latest Citroën models. These slender segments create a striking look, emphasizing the car’s width and conveying an impression of modernity and technology. The fluid, robust form of the wings and hood contrasts with the technical elements present in the grille and headlights.

At the rear, a raised black strip on the tailgate enhances the car’s overall presence, widening its appearance while maintaining the spirit of the three-point light design. This model introduces a striking architectural feature where two light points appear to float, akin to fins, highlighting the Citroën Light Wing concept. This distinctive positioning also aids in managing complex aerodynamics, guiding airflow efficiently around the vehicle.

3. Sculpted for efficiency

The design of the C5 Aircross Concept prioritizes aerodynamics, essential for maximizing efficiency in the SUV sector. The challenge was met by maintaining integrity in both design and functionality within the constraints typically associated with SUV shapes. This concept is engineered to enhance efficiency without compromising its identity or spacious passenger accommodations, potentially extending electric range by an estimated 30 km on the highway compared to the current C5 Aircross.

The front features a streamlined and organized layout, with the lowered hood facilitating smoother airflow. The overall shape of the C5 Aircross Concept is well-balanced for optimal aerodynamics, measuring 4.65m in length while remaining at a height of 1.66m to streamline air intake along its length.

Aerodynamic performance is further enhanced by the sloped roof and the cabin’s smooth curve. Inspired by modern technology and electronics, including cooling and ventilation strategies, the design incorporates striated two-tone elements on the rear quarter panel to direct airflow effectively.

The Citroën Light Wing rear lights embody this aerodynamic work; by extending the light fins to an innovative position, designers have optimized airflow around this critical area while maintaining passenger space. This technique combines a hollowed section with protruding fins, creating a favorable aerodynamic structure that enhances efficiency.

Addressing drag—caused by swirling air patterns that can hinder performance—was a key focus in the C5 Aircross Concept’s design. The rear bumper’s curvature helps align the airflow to counteract drag and generate thrust. The roof has been creatively designed to optimize aerodynamics, with integrated flaps and air inlets placed strategically to boost performance further.

4. For the first time, Citroën introduces the STLA Medium platform.

Citroën’s lineup in Europe is built on contemporary platforms tailored to meet various market demands. The new C3 and C3 Aircross feature the Smart Car platform, designed to comply with European standards and equipped with advanced driving aids and connectivity features. The C5 Aircross Concept marks the debut of the new STLA Medium platform, used here for the first time, and supports multiple powertrains (internal combustion, hybrid, and fully electric) to cater to diverse customer needs. This platform also provides a suite of driving aids and state-of-the-art connectivity, ensuring adaptability in its design. With an extended wheelbase, the C5 Aircross Concept offers ample space for five passengers.

5. Even more comfort, connectivity and space on board

The C5 Aircross Concept showcases remarkable proportions, hinting at what the next C-segment SUV could potentially be. It also conceals several onboard innovations, details of which will be disclosed later. Citroën envisions the interior as a serene wellness area akin to a lounge, designed for the comfort of up to five occupants during their journeys. More information about this concept will be revealed in 2025.
