An update on the Chery Omoda 5 rear axle problem and recall has been provided. Chery Malaysia has carried out inspections on 92% of vehicles belonging to affected customers by May 24.

“Ensuring your safety is our top priority at Chery Malaysia. By May 24, we had completed inspections on 92% of the vehicles affecting our customers who had appointments at our authorised service centres,” a statement from the company read on social media yesterday.

The last update was on May 17, when Chery confirmed reaching out to all 600 affected customers. At that time, the inspection completion rate stood at 65%. Prior to that, the company had contacted 60 customers for rear axle replacement.

A total of 60 Chery Omoda 5 units in Malaysia were found to have the faulty part, manufactured on August 15, 2023. As a result, Chery Malaysia expanded the recall to include vehicles produced between August 14 and 17, encompassing a total of 600 units.

The issue was traced back to improper calibration of welding equipment at a supplier. Earlier this month, Chery Auto Malaysia VP Lee Wen Hsiang explained, “After a thorough investigation, the supplier confirmed that an equipment calibration error occurred during a facility upgrade, where an old welding tip was replaced with a new one, leading to the calibration issue.”

Chery has launched a dedicated website for owners to verify if their vehicle is subject to the recall.
