Undergoing a transformation that updates Windstar’s trio of sailing vessels – Wind Star, Wind Spirit, and Wind Surf – the corporation has launched a multi-million-dollar, multi-year initiative for refurbishment. The renovation project, which has kicked off on the 148-passenger Wind Star, encompasses various sections of the ships, from cabins and suites to dining establishments and pool areas.

The motivation behind the extensive renovation, according to Stijn Creupelandt, Windstar’s vice president of hotel operations and product development, is to ensure that the ships’ spaces feel modern while preserving the distinctive appeal that has made each vessel noteworthy. “The focus is on providing guests with revitalized spaces that promote relaxation, encourage socializing, and cater to the versatile needs of a small-sized sailing yacht,” he explains.

As depicted in our illustrations, the new ambiance exudes a natural, sophisticated, and subtly elegant atmosphere. “It’s all about experiencing a feeling of stepping onto your personal yacht while enjoying the services of a high-end boutique hotel,” states Jessica Payne, Windstar’s interior design manager.

Here’s a breakdown of the enhancement progress.

The Initiative: The first phase of the enhancement process for the 148-passenger Wind Star commenced in Lisbon in November 2023. In this initial stage, upgrades were made to the ship’s reception area to provide more seating and retail space, the Lounge adjacent to the Yacht Club Cafe was refreshed with new furnishings and lighting, and the World Spa by Windstar and fitness center were rejuvenated, along with the installation of new equipment. Notable changes on the pool deck, a popular social spot on Wind Star, include a new pool and Jacuzzi, an expanded poolside bar, and bursts of fresh color through updated outdoor seating and lounges. Additionally, the Owner’s Suite underwent a complete redesign.

Moreover, Wind Star’s technology received a significant boost with the introduction of larger flat-screen TVs in all cabins and suites, as well as Starlink Wi-Fi.

Up Next: The second phase of Wind Star’s “Setting Sails” project is scheduled for 2026. Planned enhancements include remodeled guest staterooms. The main restaurant, Amphora, and the ship’s rooftop café for breakfast and lunch, Veranda, will undergo complete redecoration.

Windstar’s Wind Class series of vessels, including Wind Star and Wind Spirit, are embarking on fresh refurbishment projects.

The Project: Phase one of the transformation for the 148-passenger Wind Spirit will commence in April 2025. Similar to the ongoing process on its sister ship Wind Star, phase one will concentrate on updates to the reception area, retail space, and the lounge adjacent to the Yacht Club Café. Revamping of the World Spa by Windstar and the fitness center will take place, along with the installation of new equipment. Enhancements in the pool area will include a new pool and hot tub, and improvements to the poolside bar. The Owner’s Suite will undergo a complete overhaul.

A significant technology upgrade will also be undertaken, involving the installation of new, larger flat-screen TVs in all staterooms and suites, as well as Starlink Wi-Fi.

What’s Next: Phase 2 is scheduled for 2027, during which Amphora and Veranda will be revamped, alongside all suites.

The Initiative: The 310-passenger Wind Surf will undergo a $7.5 million refurbishment in two phases, commencing in November 2024 and concluding in December 2026. Both segments of the refurbishment process for Wind Surf will occur at the Navantia shipyard in Cádiz, Spain.

The initial phase will involve refurbishments to the top three suites, adopting the Broadmoor and Sea Island design featured on Star-class ships, supplemented by another suite redesigned in a yacht-inspired style. Other projects include upgrades to Amphora, the lobby, Compass Rose, the pool bar, and the boutique.

What’s Next: During the second phase of Wind Surf’s refurbishment, all accommodations will be renovated, incorporating new furnishings, bedding, carpets, interactive TVs, and updated art and décor. This is set to take place in December 2026.
