BYD has made headlines today by launching the Seal Dynamic and the 2024 Atto 3, alongside the announcement of its premium Denza brand’s entry into Malaysia. Additionally, during a press conference, the company revealed plans to introduce its Super Dual Mode (DM) plug-in hybrid vehicles in the nation.
Eagle Zhao, Managing Director of BYD Malaysia, indicated that the company aims to launch its efficiency-oriented DM-i and performance-focused DM-p powertrains. Although Zhao suggested these models might be introduced under the Denza brand, it seems unlikely in the near future, as only the electric D9 MPV has been converted to right-hand drive thus far.
Instead, BYD is expected to begin offering plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) under its own name, with the Sealion 6 likely being the first to arrive. This vehicle, a rebadged Seal U, is already available for purchase in Thailand, priced at 939,900 baht (approximately RM121,500) for the Dynamic variant.
The Sealion 6 features a single electric motor at the front, delivering 197 PS and 300 Nm of torque, coupled with a naturally aspirated 1.5-liter Xiaoyun Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine that produces 98 PS and 122 Nm of torque. Together, they generate a total system output of 218 PS and 300 Nm, enabling the Sealion 6 to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.5 seconds.
The electric motor is powered by an 18.3 kWh Blade lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, providing an impressive all-electric range of 92 km, contributing to a combined petrol-electric range of 1,092 km. Additionally, it supports DC fast charging at a maximum of 18 kW, which allows the battery to be charged from 30% to 80% in approximately 35 minutes. The vehicle also accommodates AC charging up to 6.6 kW.
Furthermore, BYD may introduce the DM-i variant of the Denza D9, which enhances the electric motor output to 231 PS and 340 Nm, while the petrol engine produces 139 PS and 231 Nm with the help of a turbocharger. This variant is equipped with a larger 20 kWh battery that offers a CLTC-rated electric range of 103 km.
Additionally, the more potent DM-p all-wheel-drive configuration is available in the BYD Han and Tang, as well as the Denza N8, delivering approximately 490 PS and a CLTC electric range of about 200 km. However, no mention has been made of the DMO variant, although it was previewed at the Malaysia Autoshow in May. The rugged Bao 5, associated with the Fangchengbao brand, is still being considered for the Malaysian market.
One challenge for the adoption of plug-in hybrids in Malaysia is the lack of incentives compared to fully electric vehicles, which could increase the cost of PHEVs. It may be more feasible for BYD to pursue local assembly for a Denza PHEV, as its upscale positioning could justify a higher price in this price-sensitive market.
