The recent bold creations by BMW have significantly diverged from its conventional design ethos, for better or for worse, evident in vehicles like the BMW XM, 7 Series, and the newly unveiled Neue Klasse. Some traditional BMW enthusiasts disapprove of the brand’s modern design direction, while others welcome the change. Despite the differing opinions on BMW’s design evolution, we can all acknowledge that these 16 vintage Bimmers from the BMW UK’s collection stand out as some of its finest creations.

These 16 cars epitomize what has made BMW an exhilarating brand for many years. Not only do their designs exude simplicity and timelessness, but most of these vehicles were true driving enthusiasts’ cars, devoid of the technology-laden elements found in contemporary Bimmers.

The story commences with the iconic BMW M1, known as the inaugural masterpiece from the M Division. During the ’70s, BMW aimed to develop a mid-engine vehicle for competing in the Group 4 GT series. However, due to numerous production hurdles, the M1 completion lagged, rendering it obsolete as Group 4 disbanded. Consequently, the Giugiaro-designed supercar became one of BMW’s notable financial setbacks but also garnered a loyal fan base.

The BMW Z8 stood out as a distinctive vehicle in the brand’s timeline, being a standalone model without a follow-up. Crafted by Henrik Fisker, the Z8 pays homage to the BMW 507, the company’s original luxury roadster. Even today, the Z8 remains one of BMW’s most aesthetically pleasing creations, retaining its allure from 1999.

The 3.0 CSL “Batmobile” could be regarded as BMW’s ultimate creation. It stood as BMW’s victorious touring vehicle pre-M1 development and remains strikingly gorgeous. Defined by its almost flawless proportions, shark-nose front, and expansive rear wing, this design stands out.

legendary. With a captivating 3.0-liter inline-six beneath its bonnet, its appeal was heightened even more.

Highlighted by BMW UK is another vehicle, which I previously did not hold in high regard but have come to admire greatly over the past few years – the M5 from the E34 generation. The E34 M5 stands out as the final M5 to be constructed by hand and the concluding model to be powered by a six-cylinder engine. Subsequently, every M5 has adopted either a V8 or V10. Its unadorned, angular ’90s aesthetics have gracefully withstood the test of time, while its straightforward mechanics are particularly valued in contrast to present-day M5s that feature all-wheel drive and may even venture into hybrid territory.
