Bentley W12 Faces its Final Chapter: The End Draws Near

Historically, automakers have relied on large engines to power their flagship vehicles, ensuring they deliver the high performance and prestige expected from premium brands. However, as the industry evolves, increasing emissions regulations and fuel efficiency standards are pushing manufacturers away from these bigger engines. Bentley is no exception, planning to retire its W12 engine after the rollout of its newly designed bespoke Mulliner coachbuilt vehicle, as reported by Autocar.

The W12 engine first made its debut in the late 1990s, appearing in the often-overlooked Volkswagen W12 concept car. It transitioned into regular production with the Audi A8 and gained prominence in the Bentley Continental GT. Initially, it offered around 450 horsepower in its naturally aspirated state, while turbocharged variants could produce up to 700 horsepower in the Continental Supersports model.

The W12 engine is projected to be completely phased out by 2026. Its availability has already been reduced; for 2022, it is exclusively featured in the top-tier GT Speed models of the Continental lineup, while lower-end versions are equipped with a V8 engine.

The W12 has played a crucial role in Bentley’s transformation from a small manufacturer to one that produces over 10,000 vehicles annually. As the brand pivots towards an all-electric future, the phased retirement of the W12 engine is drawing attention to its legacy. It is heartening to see the engine being honored through one of its final applications in a magnificent coach-built special.

The upcoming Mulliner design will be based on the Continental GT Coupe and is set to launch in 2023. It will boast new design elements that distinguish it from regular Bentley models, similar to how the Mulliner Bacalar was derived from the Continental GT Convertible.

The prized W12 engine, expected to generate 650 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque, will be included in this limited-edition Mulliner offering, which is priced between £1.5 million and £2 million before customization. Performance metrics are anticipated to align with those of the Continental GT Speed, featuring a 0-60 mph acceleration time of under 4 seconds and a top speed surpassing 200 mph.

Among the notable highlights of the W12 engine’s legacy is the extraordinary VW GTI from 2007, which was mid-engined with its powerful motor driving the rear wheels. While it was undeniably fast and somewhat challenging to handle in corners, it is fondly remembered for its commanding presence and formidable stance that redefined the Volkswagen Golf.

The W12 has enjoyed a long and remarkable journey powering various remarkable cars. Although its distinct configuration may not garner the same level of admiration as an Italian V12, it remains a powerful engine that will be sorely missed. As industrial trends shift, so too must the engines that define them.
