The Limited Edition Bentley Mulliner Bacalar: A Spectacle of Wealth Amidst Adversity
The 2021 Bentley Mulliner Bacalar, a luxurious convertible created specifically for an exclusive clientele, boasts an impressive 650 horsepower and is limited to just 12 units. While its exquisite design is a testament to Mulliner’s craftsmanship and comes with a hefty price tag of $2 million, one can’t help but question its relevance as the world grapples with economic challenges in the aftermath of 2020. For many, this extravagant vehicle may seem like a distant fantasy. However, for those fortunate enough to experience it, driving a 650-horsepower luxury convertible might just be a welcome escape from reality.
Fortunately, at least one of these rare Bacalars will be put through its paces. The Bacalar Car Zero has commenced a 20-week engineering validation program, undergoing a regimen that includes 45 separate handling and durability tests, as well as high-speed runs that exceed 200 mph. These efforts are sure to bring joy to the engineers involved; after all, the exhilaration of a 650-horsepower engine is meant to inspire smiles. Additionally, the Mulliner division is also busy with another project, the first Bentley Blower in 90 years—a continuation model from 1929 that took an astonishing 40,000 hours of labor to produce.
The Bacalar stands as the inaugural model in the Bentley Mulliner Coachbuilt lineup, featuring more than 750 custom parts, over 40 of which are crafted from carbon fiber, and nearly 100 produced through rapid additive manufacturing techniques. Bentley has certainly made a statement about their dedication to bespoke engineering.
For those not interested in the Bacalar, the Bentley Continental GT Convertible offers a more accessible option for $224,225, along with numerous available upgrades. Customers can choose a V8 engine or opt for the W12, and for a bespoke experience, they might consider the 2021 Continental GT Mulliner Convertible, which comes with an undisclosed price but features over 400,000 stitches in its interior. The select 12 buyers of the Bacalar will play a pivotal role in funding Bentley’s latest coachbuilding venture.
Regrettably, the Bacalar Car Zero will not be available on the second-hand market. After exhaustive testing that includes aerodynamic assessments in wind tunnels, high-speed stability tests, noise and vibration evaluations, and rigorous electrical system validations up to 176°F, it would certainly make an exceptional 200-mph convertible for this year’s driving season.
One lingering question remains: what will Bentley do with the specially designed Flying Spur designated for Mr. Claus, featuring a unique golden reindeer ornament in place of the traditional Flying B emblem?
