When a major automaker like Ford encounters an issue with a day’s production of Bronco Sports, it often leads to the recall of numerous vehicles. In contrast, for a smaller luxury manufacturer like Bentley, a similar mistake results in a much smaller scale of recall, sometimes affecting just one car. This is the case now, as Bentley has issued a recall for a single 2020 Flying Spur due to a potential issue with the fuel tank not being properly welded. This information comes from an NHTSA report.
Per the report, the unique Flying Spur involved was manufactured on August 30, 2020. Similar to a previous suspension issue with the Bronco Sport, the problem appears to have originated with the fuel tank supplier, not Bentley itself. The defect description indicates that “during the production process at the fuel tank supplier, a welding process of the fuel tank may not have been performed according to specifications,” noting that “the long-term durability of the fuel tank cannot be guaranteed.”
The report further clarifies that “a welding process of the fuel tank plastic sub-components may not have been performed according to specifications.” A poorly welded fuel tank could potentially lead to a fuel leak, which in turn raises the risk of a fire.
As is standard with recalls, the affected owner will be contacted and asked to bring the vehicle to a dealership, where the fuel tank will be replaced at no cost.
