By 2030, Audi’s high-performance division Audi Sport will undergo a complete electrification transformation as revealed by its director Sebastian Grams in an extensive dialogue with Autocar. Grams disclosed the electrification plans for Audi’s full range of sport vehicles, encompassing SUVs, as well as the revered TT and R8 models, ensuring that the upcoming offerings will be just as “awe-inspiring” as the current lineup.

Audi’s initiative to electrify its performance fleet is already in motion, with a focus on hybridization in models such as the RS6 and RS7, and full electric propulsion in the E-Tron GT. The term “electrification” encompases hybrid and electric powertrains, and in the coming years, both will gain more prominence in Audi’s fastest cars. Grams plans to begin with intensified hybridization efforts and the introduction of high-performance plug-in hybrids.

“Our focus is on developing performance plug-in hybrid systems,” stated Grams. “I can assure you that this direction will not disappoint compared to the current driving experience.”

Grams believes that achieving this goal is feasible with the precise torque management of electric motors, foreseeing an enjoyable driving experience. While hybrid systems may add some weight, Grams is optimistic that the impact will be minimal, and potential weight distribution challenges can be addressed.

Aside from performance, the image projected by the vehicles is crucial, according to Grams, who believes that sound remains an integral element. However, he acknowledges that generational preferences may shift, with younger digital-oriented drivers potentially placing less emphasis on this aspect compared to current enthusiasts. Exterior aesthetics are also paramount; RS models will continue to exude a strong presence as it resonates with consumer preferences. Hence, options for customizable aesthetics are increasingly integrated into Audi’s business strategy, indicating a potential need for a similar approach in the software realm of automobiles.

Regarding the vehicles earmarked for these advancements, Grams mentioned a significant focus on expanding the SUV lineup with increased offerings of electric and high-performance RS models. However, Grams stressed the importance of maintaining the exclusivity of the RS brand by refraining from creating a performance variant for every model. While Audi Sport’s innovation is constrained by the utilization of existing platforms to avoid bespoke development, this approach may complicate the preservation of the TT and R8 legacy.

“Our greatest aspiration is to introduce a successor to the R8,” expressed Grams, highlighting that the future of this supercar hinges on meeting internal objectives, aligning with the electrification strategy, and securing the necessary approvals. “The decision-making process relies on other stakeholders within the organization besides us.”

Due to similar considerations, the fate of the TT remains uncertain, pending the same evaluations. Given the confirmed electric future for the potential R8 successor, the TT would need to receive approval before Audi’s full electric target of 2026. However, current economic conditions make this a challenging prospect, indicating a potential transition to an E-Tron variant or a discontinuation of the model altogether.
