During a practice session on Thursday ahead of the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, the Formula 1 Safety Car was involved in a serious high-speed accident. The incident occurred when the Aston Martin Vantage F1 Edition, operated by seasoned former racer and F1’s designated Safety Car driver, Bernd Maylander, crashed at the Parabolica corner, becoming lodged under the tire barriers. Fortunately, both Maylander and his passenger escaped without injuries.
The Parabolica is an expansive, elongated right-hand turn taken at dangerous speeds, situated at the end of the long back straight where F1 cars can exceed 200 mph. Following this corner, drivers accelerate past 200 mph again as they charge toward the first chicane on the main straightaway. While the exact speed Maylander was driving during his test laps is unclear, reports from Motorsport.com suggest he was on a “quick lap.”
With a powerful 656-hp V8 engine, Maylander could have been traveling at around 180 mph when he lost control. Reports indicate he veered off, skidded into the gravel trap, and collided with the tire wall. Fortunately, the car did not flip or roll when it hit the gravel, allowing for an easier exit for both drivers after the vehicle came to a stop.
Given Maylander’s extensive experience, it is likely that a mechanical failure or a similar issue contributed to the accident. While the Parabolica is notorious for its speed and angle, it is not considered the most challenging corner of the season.
I searched for footage of the crash on YouTube and social media but was unable to locate any. However, F1 photographer Kym Illman captured the images seen here.
