Asahi Kasei attains technological advancement with revolutionary electrolyte

The Japanese firm Asahi Kasei has successfully demonstrated the effectiveness of lithium-ion battery (LIB) utilization with its unique high ionic conductive electrolyte1. This breakthrough in technology enables enhanced power output even in low temperatures and enhances durability at elevated temperatures – crucial challenges faced by current LIBs. Moreover, this innovation has the potential to reduce costs and shrink the size of battery packs, thereby elevating energy density.

The ideal temperature range for LIBs usage is between 10 to 45°C. Operating at lower temperatures results in decreased cell capacity, reduced power output, and longer charging durations. Conversely, higher temperatures lead to accelerated aging, diminishing the battery’s lifespan. Given the rapid growth of energy storage systems globally, particularly in the electric vehicle sector, ensuring stable battery performance and durability in extreme temperatures is paramount.

Facilitating downsizing and cost-efficiency of batteries

As a frontrunner in lithium-ion battery exploration and battery material production, Asahi Kasei embarked on developing a high ionic conductive electrolyte in 2010. This initiative was spearheaded by Honorary Fellow Akira Yoshino2, who identified acetonitrile as a promising component in lithium-ion battery electrolytes. Through the incorporation of high ionic conductive electrolyte, it becomes feasible to minimize battery pack dimensions while sustaining power output, which in turn boosts battery energy density and reduces total pack cost. The anticipated advantages are outlined below.

Scheduled commercialization in 2025

In comparison to cells utilizing traditional electrolyte, the tested prototype cylindrical cells exhibited high power at −40°C and doubled the cycle life at 60°C prior to reaching a state of health (SOH) of 80%. Commercialization is slated for 2025.

Kazuya Noda, Senior General Manager at Asahi Kasei’s Innovation Strategy Center, remarked, “This proof of concept represents a significant technological advancement. By globally licensing the electrolyte technology to LIB manufacturers, Asahi Kasei aims to play a role in reducing costs and streamlining battery systems, pivotal for fostering a more sustainable society.”
