- A petite electric SUV, the Optiq becomes part of the Ultium GM EV lineup which encompasses the Blazer EV, Equinox EV, and Lyriq
- Initial prices are in the mid-$50,000s—and the Mexican-produced Optiq is likely eligible for tax benefits
- Cadillac pledges a driving range of about 300 miles when fully charged
A new EV entry has been unveiled by Cadillac, the high-end GM brand, presenting a product that defies the typical entry-level expectations in terms of dimensions, technology, and cost.
The 2025 Cadillac Optiq is expected to be priced at around $54,000, including delivery charges, upon its launch later this year, boasting a range of approximately 300 miles, as claimed by Cadillac. While this price point may not be as budget-friendly as the XT4 ($39,090 base price), Cadillac’s gasoline-driven compact entry SUV, if it qualifies for the $7,500 EV tax credit, it could be priced similarly to today’s XT5 SUV ($47,290 base price), offering significantly more space for both cargo and passengers.
After an up-close inspection of the Optiq a few weeks ago, Green Car Reports noted that this vehicle departs from Cadillac’s longstanding design ethos of Artistry & Technology, characterized by chiseled corners, sharp contours, and straight lines. With the Optiq, the brand is embracing softer sculpting on the sides, a lower bonnet profile, and a more rounded roofline. This model presents a less imposing and chiseled appearance at the front compared to the rest of the lineup, including the larger Cadillac Lyriq EV. The Optiq cleverly relies on lighting—instead of distinct sharp lines—to maintain its sleek look and enable a more aerodynamic shape.

Aero and lighting are key in Optiq design
“The primary focus on the Optiq was to achieve a sporty, aerodynamic appearance,” shared Cadillac design manager Hoon Kim. “This drove our efforts to keep it as sleek as possible.”
Various intricate design elements capture attention. Cadillac employs a cross-hatching laser-etching technique in the grille section to define the lighting signature, and it precisely imprints a graphic motif on the rear quarter panel—on soundproof laminate glass—that mirrors the Cadillac emblem. All Optiq models will feature a panoramic glass roof.

One notable design feature is the visual impression created by the rear lights seeming to descend along the rear pillars, momentarily vanishing under the edges of the beltline before reappearing below.
It’s remarkable that in an era of limitless possibilities in EV design, the Cadillac Optiq closely mirrors its relative, the Chevy Equinox EV, in terms of silhouette. The Optiq shares the Equinox EV’s 116.3-inch wheelbase, approximately 190-inch length, and 85-kWh battery pack.

Optiq features AWD, Blackwing performance ties
Similarly, it adopts a front-wheel-biased all-wheel-drive setup, with a more potent permanent-magnet motor at the front producing around 200 hp, complemented by an induction motor delivering approximately 90 hp to the rear wheels. This configuration enables the vehicle to function as a front-wheel-drive model during constant cruising speeds, offering a combined output of an estimated 300 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque.
While the Lyriq embodies prestige, the Optiq embodies the sporty, youthful, and dynamic side of Cadillac, as per Cadillac officials. With a performance engineer from the Blackwing lineup involved in its development, Cadillac aimed to imbue the Optiq with a more athletic driving experience reflected in its ride and handling characteristics. Additionally, it will have a towing capacity of 1,500 pounds, with hitch accessories facilitating the transportation of other equipment.

The Optiq will provide Tour, Sport, and Snow/Ice modes, along with personalized My Mode configurations. A single-pedal driving mode will enable the vehicle to decelerate and stop without the need to touch the brake pedal under certain driving conditions. At the time of the sneak peek, Cadillac was still contemplating the interior propulsion sounds, confirming that they will differ from those in the Lyriq.
A novel charge port for Cadillac EVs
Another distinctive element compared to the Lyriq is the charge port door. It features a fresh, simplified design that will be introduced in upcoming Cadillac EVs, including the 2025 Cadillac Escalade IQ, with the headlights indicating the state of charge at a glance.

Cadillac highlighted that charging time and an exquisite interior are among the top priorities for this demographic; the aim is to replenish 79 miles in 10 minutes via DC fast-charging, though no maximum charge rate was specified.
Setting the interior apart are unique trims, such as accent fabric with patterns crafted from 100% recycled materials, and PaperWood veneer composed of tulip bark.
timber and upcycled paper. Indeed, some of it can still be perused.
Spinal support for “elder Millennials”
Cadillac focuses on attracting first-time purchasers of luxury vehicles with the Optiq, envisioning the target demographic as “elder Millennials” in their late twenties to thirties (and yes, some Millennials have already crossed the 40-year-old mark). For this group, the emphasis is on enhancing comfort. The vehicle features massaging seats and the seats are notably accommodating in terms of back support, incorporating a fresh design inspired by one crafted by GM in Europe but with added width.

The broad front area capitalizes on the flat battery pack below, featuring a relatively low cargo floor, although there is no front storage compartment. The rear seating area offers ample leg space, but my head made contact with the rear edge of the glass roof frame.
The 33-inch instrument cluster boasts a 9k resolution and boasts the capability to display over a billion colors, as per GM’s claims. While it serves as the focal point of the dashboard, it does not provide support for Apple CarPlay or Android Auto but integrates a “Google-built infotainment experience”—meaning users will need a separate data subscription for the vehicle instead of relying on their phone. GM has also made a distinction between screens and control buttons and equipped the Optiq with physical controls for climate regulation.

GM will include three years of Super Cruise advanced driver assistance technology with the Optiq, along with adaptive cruise control, an automated parking system, and a comprehensive suite of active safety features.
Optiq is part of GM’s fleet of EVs produced in Mexico
The Optiq will commence production in Mexico this autumn, at the Ramos Arizpe facility, the same plant that manufactures the Chevy Equinox EV and Blazer EV, in addition to the Honda Prologue. Production will also be scaling up in China soon, with GM banking on China, the U.S., and Europe as pivotal markets.
The Optiq will be available in Luxury and Sport trim levels, though Cadillac has yet to officially confirm all the distinctions.

As GM introduces more Ultium EVs, particularly more electric Cadillacs powered by Ultium like the larger Lyriq, it brings to mind the GM of the 1980s and the budget luxury Cimarron. How can the company create unique EVs while avoiding the pitfalls of badge engineering? The answers will unfold later this year, with Cadillac sharing additional specifications and feature details. Yet, for now, the Optiq’s sleek and exceptionally comfortable interior signals that the brand is attuned to consumers’ preferences.
