When picturing a Nissan Skyline GT-R, the typical image that comes to mind is that of a coupe. However, this norm is not set in stone, as a specialized arm of Nissan manufactured a limited quantity of saloons and even estate models. What’s more, one of these unique specimens is currently up for sale in the U.S.: a 1998 Nissan Skyline GT-R Autech 40th Anniversary Saloon.
Being listed on Cars & Bids is one of the 416 R33 GT-R saloons custom-made by Autech to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Nissan Skyline. Autech functioned as an exclusive production unit within Nissan, distinct from Nismo until fairly recently—consider it akin to Toyota’s Technocraft. Essentially, Autech simply transferred the GT-R coupe’s mechanical components onto a saloon chassis, incorporating rear bucket seats and distinctive bodywork.
Other than that, it retains the same features that make the GT-R iconic. It houses the renowned 2.6-liter RB26DETT twin-turbo inline-six engine, churning out 276 horsepower and 271 pound-feet of torque. Power is transmitted through a five-speed manual gearbox to Nissan’s rear-biased ATTESA ET-S all-wheel-drive setup, while handling is further enhanced by HICAS rear-wheel steering. As R33 saloons share the same wheelbase as their coupe counterparts, any distinctions in handling are expected to be minimal.
As per the listing, this particular vehicle was brought into the country earlier this year and comes with a New Hampshire title. It has approximately 81,800 miles on the clock and is mostly untouched except for additional lights, window deflectors, an aftermarket gear knob, and a rear spoiler. The listing mentions a recent minor maintenance session, involving the replacement of engine oil, air intake filter, and steering arm pads in the rear wheel-steering system. (Typically, imported JDM cars require more extensive servicing to ensure daily reliability.)
This vehicle will be auctioned online through Cars & Bids, concluding on Wednesday, August 2, with the highest bid standing at $47,500 at the time of this publication. While the R33 may not be the most sought-after Skyline GT-R for some, this Autech saloon is a rare and well-preserved model. Undoubtedly, this rarity will fetch a premium price, especially for enthusiasts envisioning a sleeper.
