Attempting to break into the U.S. market, Alfa Romeo acknowledges the need for a substantial offering. To address this, the company plans to introduce a sizeable electric vehicle developed in the United States, set for release in 2027.

CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato unveiled these plans during a recent media briefing following Stellantis’ half-year results presentation, as reported by Reuters. The electric vehicle’s development in the U.S. doesn’t exclusively cater to American tastes but aims for global appeal. While the body style remains undecided, a crossover seems probable given the intended broader market reach.

While not adhering to the conventional SUV or coupe style, the upcoming model leaves room for innovative options like a wagon or even a utility vehicle similar to the Hyundai Santa Cruz. Scheduled for 2027, the necessity to align with Alfa’s electrification strategy designates it as an electric vehicle.

“Our large vehicle offering must appeal to the global markets—American, Chinese, European,” Imparato stated. “We are striving to strike the right balance [in body styles]. This decision will be finalized by the end of the year.”

Interestingly, Imparato didn’t disclose the manufacturing location for the vehicle. Traditionally, Alfa has favored producing its vehicles in Italy; however, Stellantis’ electric vehicle strategy might necessitate a compromise. Given that the upcoming Dodge Hornet is expected to be manufactured in an Alfa facility, a reverse scenario may not be far-fetched.

The final shape of this Alfa model will play a pivotal role as Stellantis evaluates its brand portfolio. Underperforming brands within Stellantis have a limited timeframe to exhibit their viability, prompting brands like Lancia to reinvent themselves. For Alfa, this upcoming model signifies a potential turning point.
