Many car enthusiasts in the USA have embraced the motto of “LS-swapping everything”. The dimensions, power output, affordability, and abundance of the latest small block Chevy engines make them an ideal choice for engine swaps in various vehicles. However, this 1992 Mazda 929, with its LS engine swap, stands out as perhaps the most unique and extraordinary LS conversion ever.

Listed in the Facebook group Obscure Cars For Sale, this Mazda 929 initially started as an unusual and peculiar car. Known as the Mazda Sentia in Japan, it was a luxury sedan powered by a rear-wheel drive JE-ZE V6 engine that was imported to the USA in 1991. In Japan, it was equipped with advanced features such as rear-wheel steering and a sophisticated solar ventilation system designed to keep the interior cool on hot days. In contrast, the American market received a Mazda luxury sedan that was aimed to compete against the Toyota Cressida.

It’s impressive that this Mazda has survived till now, especially with a recent LS engine swap carried out just 500 miles ago. The seller mentions that the conversion was executed meticulously, utilizing an aftermarket wiring harness, a well-arranged engine bay, and a thoughtfully positioned gear lever. Instead of opting for a lighter aluminum block LS engine, a cost-effective decision was made to use the iron block LQ4 truck engine.

Various performance components from a Pontiac GTO were integrated into the engine, including the intake and LS2 fuel injectors. To accommodate the engine within the Mazda, a GTO rear sump oil pan was adapted, and custom engine mounts were likely fabricated. Rather than the pricier T56 manual transmission commonly found in LS-swapped vehicles, a Chevy Colorado gearbox was connected to the modified LQ4 engine. The setup comprises a blend of readily available and affordable GM parts, diverging from the more expensive components used in Camaros or Corvettes.

The unaltered sections of the car exhibit excellent upkeep and cleanliness. Priced at $8,000 by the seller, this peculiar Mazda 929 represents an incredible value proposition. Acquiring a manual V8 sedan at such a reasonable price, boasting uniqueness and intrigue, is quite remarkable. Referred to as a budget-friendly Chevrolet SS, this vehicle, though untested in terms of performance, undeniably stands out and deserves a cherished place in someone’s collection.
