With the launch of Acura’s new TLX Type S approaching, The Drive has prepared a detailed guide to inform readers about the Type S model. For those interested in a more in-depth understanding—particularly through video insights from the creators of this performance badge—Acura has produced a documentary.

A significant feature of this retrospective is the showcase of every North American Acura S model from the 2000s, likely extracted from Acura’s own collection. Models featured include the CL Type S, the 2002-2003 3.2 TL Type S, the renowned DC5 RSX Type S, and the beloved 2007-2008 TL Type S. Even hardcore fans of Honda/Acura who think they know all there is to know about these vehicles will likely find value in seeing stunning examples of these four models together, driven and recorded in brilliant high definition.

In the documentary, key figures from Acura discuss their vision for the Type S vehicles in North America, what differentiates them from Honda’s more aggressive Type R models, and the process behind their development. Notably, they mention a unique, one-off “AC-R” Honda Accord Coupe, which was created to set the standard for how a Type S-branded Acura should perform. Capable of reaching 166 mph and achieving a full g of lateral grip, the 300-hp AC-R played a crucial role in guiding the design of the CL.

The Type S branding disappeared along with the performance-driven 2008 TL, but it’s making a comeback with the new TLX Type S. Acura plans to introduce a higher-performance Type S variant for all future models, including SUVs like the MDX and RDX. Currently, the standard TLX is a pleasant car to drive and admire, but it falls short of being thrilling. Let’s hope that the enhanced and powerful Type S edition changes that.
