At the North American International Auto Show on Monday, Acura revealed plans to revive the Type-S badge on its vehicles, broaden its “A-Spec” sport trim across its model lineup, and introduce an exclusive turbocharged V6 engine for upcoming Acuras.

The Type-S label was last seen on the Acura TL Type-S in 2008, following the discontinuation of the RSX Type-S. Both models offered enhanced performance with additional horsepower, cosmetic upgrades, the choice (or requirement) for a manual gearbox, and various performance enhancements like modified suspension and improved brake systems. Acura confirmed that “multiple Acura models” will receive these Type-S enhancements, though specific details have not yet been disclosed.

Acura plans to apply its A-Spec package across its entire lineup, with A-Spec variations soon to be included in “every new core model in development.” Currently, the ILX and TLX sedans are the only models that feature A-Spec upgrades, but the TLX A-Spec will be refreshed this quarter and a 2.4-liter inline-four option will be made available, while the 2019 RDX A-Spec is set to launch later this year.

Little information is available regarding the forthcoming turbocharged V6; Acura has not released specifics about its displacement, expected horsepower, fuel efficiency, or the number of turbochargers. Similar to the A-Spec and Type-S branding, this engine will be featured in various Acura models and will be paired with the super handling all-wheel-drive system, which will also be featured in the 2019 RDX.

Meanwhile, Toyota, the rival of Acura’s parent company Honda, is enhancing its performance offerings under the Gazoo Racing brand, which recently showcased a 1,000-horsepower concept car at the Tokyo Auto Salon and is reportedly releasing the new Supra in multiple performance variants. However, the absence of direct ties between Toyota’s Lexus brand—a key competitor of Acura—and Gazoo Racing could limit competition between Acura’s expanding performance lineup and Lexus.
