Rarely does a Formula 1 vehicle become available for purchase, especially one with a history of winning races. However, affluent admirers of Kimi Raikkonen can celebrate as the renowned Finnish driver’s McLaren MP4-17 has been revealed to be up for auction, as detailed by CarBuzz.
Being offered by RM Sotheby’s, the specific car is the McLaren MP4-17A-06, which Raikkonen raced in the 2002 Formula 1 World Championship. The -06 chassis acted as a backup vehicle for the first three rounds of that season and later participated in seven races throughout the year. Notably, at the Grand Prix De France, the car achieved its most impressive finish of second place, with Raikkonen outracing his teammate David Coulthard.
The chassis was later upgraded to the MP4-17D configuration for the 2003 season. Uncommon in modern Formula 1, this chassis was used in consecutive years due to McLaren’s challenges with the delayed MP4-18 design. During the season opener, David Coulthard secured his 13th and final career win with this car. Raikkonen then steered this chassis to second-place finishes at both Suzuka and Imola.
Powering the MP4-17 is a Mercedes-Benz FO110M racing engine, boasting a 3.0-liter V10 that delivers an impressive 845 horsepower at a breathtaking 18,500 rpm. Representing an era of refined engines with soaring rev limits and intense sounds. Crafted by a design team including notable figures like Adrian Newey and Peter Prodromou, each known for their championship-winning contributions in the motorsport realm.
The car has been restored to its original MP4-17A setup from the 2002 season. The vehicle is said to retain its initial West livery, though the branding of the cigarette company is not clearly visible in the auction photos. Nevertheless, the car appears to be in excellent condition, with pristine wiring, hoses, and fittings. Additionally, there are informative tags indicating the appropriate fluids for various components of the engine and transmission. Moreover, McLaren has included a booklet showcasing the car’s accomplishments during its competitive history.
This vehicle doesn’t possess the same level of prestige as some others we’ve observed in the market. Although, it remains a Formula 1 race victor despite not being the top performer in its prime. Additionally, it was driven by a former World Champion, albeit before he claimed the championship. Even today, Raikkonen still commands a dedicated following. The exceptionally talented driver is recognized for his straightforward demeanor, unwavering velocity, and amusingly candid communications over team communication. Many enthusiasts would relish the opportunity to experience the thrill of driving the same car he once piloted.
To acquire the MP4-17 for yourself, be prepared to invest approximately $2.1 to $2.7 million USD for this privilege. This vehicle is scheduled for auction at the RM Sotheby’s St. Moritz event in Switzerland on September 17.
