Staying updated on the latest Hot Wheels releases can be challenging, but a specific model caught my attention this week that I must look out for: the iconic and somewhat notorious Nissan Skyline GT-R R34 Pace Car from Gran Turismo.
As part of the second wave of Pop Culture releases for 2024, the R34 will make its debut alongside another Gran Turismo favorite, Nissan’s Concept 2020 Vision GT. While a previous version of the white, red, and black GT-R was unveiled in 2018, it received criticism for having the livery applied only partially. This new release seems promising and would be a great addition to any collection. Although it lacks a roof light bar, I’m still excited to add it to my collection.
If you’ve played Gran Turismo on the PlayStation 2, the Skyline will ring a bell. Originally featured in the Gran Turismo Concept series as a guide for license tests, it gained more popularity in Gran Turismo 4 where players chased it on tracks like the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Its drivable debut was in GT4, and it continued to be present in GT5, GT6, and even the PSP version. In later installments like GT Sport and GT7, it was replaced with an R35-based variant sporting a similar livery.
The GT-R Pace Car is synonymous with Gran Turismo unlike other virtual race cars like the Castrol Tom’s Supra or the Suzuki Escudo Pikes Peak Special. While it’s purely a fictional creation, it holds a special place in the hearts of gamers. If we’re talking about fictional race cars deserving diecast replicas, the Honda S2000 LM Race Car with its distinctive features like the integrated light pod for endurance racing and sleek design is a top contender. It’s a testament to Polyphony Digital’s exceptional design prowess over the years.
Regardless, having a miniature version of this car on my desk will always bring a smile, even if it had caused frustration during those challenging license tests. Time indeed heals all wounds, even those related to gaming skill anxiety.
