Year, Make, Model: The 2019 Hyundai Elantra might appear to be entirely redesigned at first glance, but it is actually an update rather than a complete overhaul, as it continues to progress through its lifecycle.

Topline: Having debuted in early 2016, the sixth-generation Elantra has received a fresh appearance to compete more effectively with rivals such as Honda and Nissan.

What’s New: A standout feature of the 2019 Elantra is its newly designed front end, which includes a restructured hood, new front fenders, an updated grille, and particularly new headlights. The rear of the vehicle has also been enhanced with a redesigned trunk and taillights, drawing inspiration from the Sonata. Additionally, new wheel designs are available in sizes ranging from 15 to 17 inches across six different trim levels.

Inside, the cabin has received modifications, including a new steering wheel design, updated air vents, HVAC controls, and instrument cluster. The SEL trim introduces Hyundai SmartSense technologies focused on safety and convenience. In comparison, the 2019 Toyota Corolla and 2019 Honda Civic come equipped with standard safety features in their respective trim levels.

Quotable: Scott Margason, Hyundai’s director of product planning, stated, “The 2019 Elantra’s interior and exterior updates were made to maintain its appealing design while integrating affordable and sought-after features. We redesigned the hood, front fenders, fascia, grille, headlights, as well as the rear fascia, trunk, and taillights to project a striking and confident image. The relocation of the rear license plate to the lower fascia enhances the vehicle’s overall design.”

What You Need to Know: The Elantra retains two four-cylinder engine options: a 1.4-liter with 128 horsepower and a 2.0-liter generating 147 hp. The sportier Elantra Sport, featuring a turbocharged 1.6-liter engine, is expected to be released later this year. While pricing has yet to be announced, it is anticipated to be disclosed closer to the sedan’s fall launch. The 2018 Hyundai Elantra has a starting price of $14,450.
