The Lexus CT is still going strong, even as it is set to be discontinued in the U.S. market. However, this entry-level model from Lexus will continue to be available in other parts of the world. To keep it fresh, the seven-year-old hatchback is receiving a facelift. Originally unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 2010, the CT hatch was the first of its kind, breaking away from the trend of luxury competitors such as Audi and Mercedes-Benz, who relied on diesel engines. Instead, Lexus opted for the successful Hybrid Synergy Drive from its parent company, rebranded as Lexus Hybrid Drive.
The 2018 model year brings minor yet noticeable updates. The refreshed design includes new headlights and taillights on both the front and rear fascias, along with an all-new spindle grille. Inside, the biggest update is the upgrade to a larger 10.3-inch infotainment display.
The five-door model continues to utilize the 1.8-liter Atkinson-cycle engine that was originally developed for the third-generation Prius. This combination of a combustion engine and electric motor yields a total output of 134 horsepower. This power level may feel lacking, especially considering that the Lexus is heavier than the Prius and has a higher drag coefficient, making it less aerodynamic.
This underwhelming performance might explain the decline in U.S. sales, ultimately leading Lexus to decide against continuing the vehicle’s availability. Had the company proceeded with plans for additional variants like the CT 300h or CT 400h, it could have potentially revived this floundering model and paved the way for a second generation. There were also rumors of a gasoline-only version using the 2.0-liter inline-4 turbo engine first seen in the NX crossover, but ultimately, Lexus decided to stick with just the single model.
Lexus is no stranger to limited hybrid offerings, as seen with the short-lived HS 250h. While the CT has enjoyed a longer production run, it seems to be facing a similar fate. The NX will now take the mantle as the entry-level model until the UX crossover makes its debut later this year.
