According to new data released today by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), the production of commercial vehicles (CVs) in the UK surged by 25.9% in September, with 14,643 vans, buses, trucks, coaches, and taxis manufactured. This marks a rebound in production following the usual August slowdown associated with lower manufacturing volumes.

Exports played a pivotal role, constituting 63.3% of September’s total production, which increased by 37.2% to 9,276 units. Consistent with long-standing trends, the European Union received the majority of these shipments (98.7%), highlighting the importance of seamless trade relations across the Channel. Additionally, production for the domestic market rose by 10.1%, totaling 5,367 units.

For the year to date, UK commercial vehicle plants have produced 93,447 units, reflecting an 8.5% increase compared to 2023, marking the strongest performance for the first nine months since 2008. This growth comes after supply chain challenges in the second quarter eased during the third quarter. Notably, exports led the growth with a 15.1% increase, compensating for a 2.5% decline in domestic production.

Mike Hawes, Chief Executive of SMMT, stated,

It’s encouraging to see UK plants increasing commercial vehicle production following the usual summer breaks. With strong demand driving our output primarily from EU markets, we need to explore ways to enhance our trade relationships with our closest partners, as well as with markets around the globe. This must be paired with strategies aimed at maintaining manufacturing competitiveness. Next week’s Budget offers an opportunity to detail how the government plans to collaborate with the industry to secure further investment essential for sustaining growth, jobs, and prosperity.

This report coincides with new SMMT trade data highlighting that the automotive sector continues to be the largest exporter of manufactured goods in the UK, expanding its share of all goods exports to 13.9% in the first half of this year. Following a record year in 2023, total trade in this sector reached £114 billion in the 12 months leading up to June, comprising £46.8 billion in exports and £67.2 billion in imports, underscoring the significant role of UK automotive in bolstering economic growth and trade.2

To maintain and enhance this critical contribution, the SMMT is urging that the Autumn Budget reaffirms the funding outlined last year in the Advanced Manufacturing Plan. Additionally, it calls for measures to provide competitively priced low-carbon energy, attract investment—especially in zero-emission supply chains—and support the reskilling and upskilling of the industry’s workforce. There is also an urgent need for actions that foster a healthy market, including the continuation of the Plug-in Van Grant and investments in charging infrastructure tailored to the unique requirements of vans, trucks, buses, and coaches.

Note: SMMT data may be revised periodically as new information comes to light.
