When Mercedes-Benz introduced its new lineup of inline four- and six-cylinder engines last fall, car enthusiasts welcomed the return of smooth and powerful engines, signaling a departure from the long-standing dominance of the more fuel-efficient “V” configurations in the performance sector. However, Mercedes made it clear that this new engine family was specifically designed for electrification, not merely to satisfy nostalgic fans.

Recent developments have shed light on Mercedes’ broader strategy. According to a report from Wheels, Mercedes-AMG is set to unveil a new hybrid powertrain tagged “53” in the 2018 CLS four-door coupe. This powertrain will feature a turbocharged variant of the M256 inline six engine, generating up to 430 horsepower, along with a 70-horsepower electric motor.

This new CLS53 will boast more power than the existing Mercedes-AMG E43’s turbocharged V6, positioning it close to the 503-horsepower C63 S. The -53 powertrain is expected to take the place of the -43 models as the “entry-level” AMG, slotting below the high-performance twin-turbo V8 that powers the brand’s top-tier vehicles.

A source for Wheels clarified that these new models will not be plug-in hybrids and won’t have the capability to run solely on electric power. Instead, the electric motor will likely function as a “mild” hybrid system, providing assistance to the gasoline engine during heavy loads and reclaiming energy through regenerative braking.

The 53 designation is anticipated to extend to AMG versions of the E-Class sedan, coupe, convertible, and S-Class sedan. Wheels’ source also suggested that this powertrain could eventually be introduced in the GLC, GLE, and GLS SUVs, although some smaller models might lose the hybrid feature to reduce costs..
