The New BMW M5 Unveiled: A High-Performance Sedan

BMW has revealed its highly anticipated M5, a groundbreaking addition that meets the expectations of automotive enthusiasts. The Bavarian automaker has gradually shared details about this sports sedan over the past few months, and even offered prototype test drives to select journalists before the official unveiling.

Despite being well-prepared for the big reveal, seeing the M5 in its full form is still an exciting moment. This new model, boasting 600 horsepower and all-wheel drive, perfectly aligns with the expectations set by earlier leaks and speculations.

The heart of the 2018 BMW M5 is a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 engine that generates a powerful 600 horsepower at RPMs between 5,700 and 6,600. This puts it on par with competitors like the Mercedes-AMG E63 S. The M5 also delivers an impressive torque of 553 pound-feet, maintaining a steady output from 1,800 to 5,700 RPM. This formidable power is channeled through an eight-speed automatic transmission, optimized for performance, which can be customized to suit the driver’s preferences, including manual shifting options.

A noteworthy first for BMW’s M lineup, the M5 features an all-wheel-drive system designed to predominantly deliver power to the rear wheels. The rear axle utilizes an active limited-slip differential to enhance performance. For those seeking a more dynamic drive, the M Dynamic Mode and 4WD Sport settings further favor the rear wheels, promoting oversteer. Additionally, a simple switch allows drivers to toggle the M5 into rear-wheel-drive mode, allowing for traditional driving thrills.

Acceleration in the BMW M5 is astonishing—hitting 0 to 60 mph in just 3.2 seconds and reaching 124 mph in 11.1 seconds. The top speed for standard models is capped at 155 mph, while versions equipped with the M Driver’s Package can push the limit to 189 mph.

When it comes to braking, the M5 comes standard with robust 15.5-inch front discs paired with six-piston calipers and 14.9-inch rear discs with single-piston floating calipers, ensuring ample stopping power. For track enthusiasts, BMW offers optional carbon-ceramic brakes, easily distinguishable by their gold calipers compared to the standard blue ones.

Aerodynamically, the new M5 sports larger front air intakes and features a carbon fiber-reinforced plastic roof to reduce weight and lower the vehicle’s center of gravity.

Inside, the M5 is outfitted with modern amenities typically found in the BMW 5 Series, such as the iDrive system, heads-up display, and Gesture Control, surrounded by luxurious leather upholstery. Unique to the M5 are sport-styled seats, alongside a substantial M steering wheel featuring two customizable buttons for immediate access to preferred settings on suspension, engine response, and transmission.

The latest M5 stands as a testament to BMW’s commitment to blending luxury with performance, ensuring it remains a leader in the realm of high-performance sedans.
